George Dawson was an enslaved black man living in Texas. For most of his life he could neither read nor write. In 1898 he learned to do both and wrote a book about his experiences as a slave.
He became something of a celebrity even in Texas even in those segregated days and eventually people in his hometown got around to naming a middle school after him.
This week, that middle school banned the book George Dawson wrote from the school library because it dealt with slavery, segregation and Jim Crow-ism- -all subjects the school board felt were inappropriate for 7th and 8th-graders.
You can't make this stuff up.
God help us.
